I wasn't always overweight. In fact, for years I maintained a healthy weight that was ideal for my age. I could eat practically anything I wanted and not gain a pound. My family chalked it up to "good genes", and my friends would glare at me enviously when we'd go shopping together and they'd be resigned to the "Plus" side while I frolicked among the cute "Petites".
Then I hit college. FREEDOM! No curfews, no nagging parents, just the sweet taste of independence I craved. My parents warned me about the "Freshman Five" -- all those late nights spent with cheap pizza delivery and microwave noodles But I was convinced my "good genes" would take care of me.
And at first, they did. Late cram sessions were the norm, as were burgers, fries and shakes from the fast food place down the street. The Freshman Five became the Freshman Fifteen. A couple pounds here and there quickly added up - and before I knew it, the scale was in a tailspin 127 became 139 became 152 became 173 190 210.
By the time my senior year of college had rolled around, I was brimming with nasty cellulite on my hips, butt and thighs. My face had sprouted an extra chin. I noticed that lugging around all that extra fat made it hard to walk up stairs, and taking the elevator all the time was starting to take its toll on me. My doctor even warned me that if I didn't do something quick, all that extra weight was going to lead to high blood pressure, heart disease or even diabetes.
Of course being a headstrong person, I didn't really take what my doctor told me to heart. But I probably should have, because what happened next completely changed the way I saw myself (and the way others saw me too).
Spring Break 2009 - Time to hit the beach and soak up some rays! No sooner than I had slipped on my bathing suit and proceeded to work on a glowing tan, than I heard this amazingly gorgeous guy say loudly to his friends as they walked by
"Hey look! They're serving rotisserie chicken today or is that rotisserie whale?"
I opened my eyes to see a whole gaggle of people around me, snickering, pointing, laughing and whispering under their breath. It's a good thing the sun was in my eyes to hide the tears of anger I felt. My friend snapped this photo of me (see photo located on top right of this page) after that incident.
I was determined to do something about my weight - but where would I start? I was young and practically broke. I didn't have any money for fancy weight loss machines, a gym membership or even an expensive diet program.
One day, while I was on the couch, wallowing in self-pity with cold slices of extra-cheese and sausage pizza, I saw Oprah on TV talking about a new celebrity weight loss program that famous stars like Kim Kardashian, Shakira and Eva Longoria were trying - with amazing results.
It was called the Acai Berry Diet (pronounced a-sigh-ee). Acai is a purple berry that is grown in the Amazon - it tastes kind of like a cross between a blueberry and a raspberry. It was making waves in Hollywood and all across the nation - and for good reason. Dr. Oz, a favorite Oprah guest and health consultant said:
I sighed. It sounded so wonderful But it was probably something I'd never be able to afford anyway.
That's when I heard that VivaCaps Acai (the company making the Acai berry diet) was giving away free samples of their product. You could try the Acai berry diet for 15 days and just pay shipping. I bolted up out of my chair. "I'm gonna do it!" I announced to no one in particular.
I wrote down the VivaCaps acai berry diet website and immediately put in my name for a sample bottle. I was excited. The kind of results I'd heard were from people just like me who had gained a few pounds over a long period of time - and acai berry just seemed to make the fat and inches practically melt off their bodies. No wonder you hardly see any overweight Brazilian women!
While I was waiting for my acai berry sample to arrive, I was spending another dreary afternoon parked in front of the TV when I stumbled across Dr. Oz on Oprah again - this time he was talking about the benefits of fiber and the colon.
I remember thinking "Oh this is all I need to hear about at lunch -- colon cleansing" but the more I listened, the more I was curious. Apparently, as you eat, over time stuff builds up in your colon and intestines. It sounds gross, I know, but doctors have autopsied people who had as much as 30-40 pounds (yes, pounds!) of undigested matter in their colon.
Consider this. A person in top physical shape has one bowel movement a day.
Most people eat anywhere between 3-6 meals (including snacks) a day. So you've got an extra 5 meals or so just lounging around in your body, taking up space! Now imagine something like that piling up in your body every single day!
The side effects of something like this are what sends many people running out to the pharmacy at all hours of the day and night for "treatments" (i.e. Constipation, Hemorrhoids, Bad Breath, Yeast Infections, etc)
When really, the problem is all in the food you've already eaten! Dr. Oz recommended a product called Colon Cleanse Pro - which is a gentle cleanser that flushes out the unwanted toxins from the body (this is NOT your grandma's colon cleanser that will have you sprinting to the bathroom and chained to the toilet for hours - thank goodness times have changed!).
And when I heard Oprah mention Colon Cleanse Pro were offering a free trial of it too - I started to wonder
What if I Could Combine Both Products - A Sort of One-Two Punch How Much Weight Would I Lose Then?
Now I know it's really not a good idea to combine weight loss supplements - but in this case, it made perfect sense. I'm flushing out all the unwanted, toxic buildup of "old food" in my body and replacing it with healthy acai berry as well as other nutritious, low-calorie foods.
Here's my picture today (see picture labeled "After" on top right of this page), holding up my "fat jeans" that I took with me to the beach just a few short months ago. I haven't set one foot on a treadmill since then. I got a free sample bottle of VivaCaps Organic Acai berry and Colon Cleanse Pro and haven't looked back at the "old" me.
Now when I go to the beach, instead of gawking and pointing, I get those envious looks from the girls and admiring looks from the guys. And I haven't let it go to my head either. I'm proud to tell anyone and everyone exactly how I lost weight!
