Brazilian Acai/Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) Berry (Euterpe oleracea)
According to Amherst College's Acai Report 2005, Acai berries contain (but are not limited to): Antioxidants, Omega fats 3,6, and 9, Amino Acids, Proteins, Xanthones, Anthocyanins, Dietary fiber, Essential minerals - iron, potassium, phosphorus calcium, and phyonutrients.

Susanne Talcott conducted the first test on humans concerning the body's ability to absorb the acai's pulp and juice. The study consisted of 12 volunteers who were asked to consume a single serving of either the acai juice or its pulp. Urine samples of the testers were studied, and showed significant increases in antioxidant activity in the blood.
Voila! Susanne Talcott proved that the super antioxidants from the berry are absorbed and contribute to the health of a human body. Later studies showed another interesting effect of the berries: they show activity against cancer cell development.
Professor Stephen Talcott found that the antioxidant rich acai berry destroyed cultured human cancer cells. His findings, published in the 2006 Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry, showed up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested responded to the berry with self-destruction.
The study extracted six chemicals made from the acai fruit and pulp and made them into concentrations to be tested. When the samples were applied to leukemia cells for 24 hours, between 35 percent and 86 percent of the cells had died.

acai.htmlOther Facts about Acai:
* Acai is a dense source of particular class of flavonoids called anthocyanins (red-blue phenols with potent antioxidant properties)
* Anthocyanins are a group of phytochemicals in red wine thought to contribute to the "French paradox", i, e. France has one of the lowest incidences of heart disease of any westernized society despite a prevalence of smoking and a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol (5). Acai pulp contains 10-30 times the anthocyanins of red wine per equal volume (1).
* The primary anthocyanin in .Acai is cyanidin-3 glucoside (1), Cyanidin-3- glucoside has been found to be 3.5 times stronger than Trolox (vitamin E analogue) and the predominate anthocyanin found in red wine (nalvadin-3-glucoside) in an ORAC analysis (measure of antioxidant capacity) (2).
* Anthocyanins have been found to "exhibit numerous potential therapeutic effects including treatment of diabetic retinopathy and fibrocystic disease of the breast in human" (2). "Other potential physiological effects of anthocyanins include radiation protective, chemoprotective, vasoprotective and anti-inflammatory agents" (2),
* The fatty acid ratio of Acai resembles that of olive oil, which is thought to be a contributing factor to the low incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean populations (1, 5),
* 60% Oleic (Omega 9) a monounsaturated, essential fatty acid, helps lower LDL (harmful cholesterol) while maintaining HDL, (beneficial cholesterol) levels (5).
* 12% Linoleic (Omega 6) a polyunsaturated, essential fatty acid, has been found to lower both LDL and HL levels (5).
* Fatty acids aid in the transport and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins ice. Vitamins A, E, D, and K(3).
* Acai contains valuable phytosterols
* Sterols are components of plant cell membranes providing numerous benefits to the human body, namely the reduction of blood plasma cholesterol (5)
* Sterols are currently being used to treat symptoms associated with BP.
.About The Amazon Acai Berry
The Acai Palm is a member of the genus Euterpe,(Euterpe oleracea) which contains 7 species of palms native to tropical Central and South America, from Belize south to Brazil and Peru, growing mainly in floodplains and swamps. The genus is named after the muse Euterpe of Greek mythology. Euterpe are tall, slender, attractive palms growing to 15-30 meters, with pinnate leaves up to 3 meters long. Many of the palms that were once in the genus Euterpe have been reclassified into the genus Prestoea (Riffle, 2003). The species Euterpe oleracea is usually called Acai Palm, after the Portuguese derivation of the Tupi word iwasai, fruit that cries or expels water. The vernacular name is also sometimes spelled Assai Palm in English.
The fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched panicles of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced per year. The fruit has a single large seed about 7-10 mm in diameter. The exocarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of acai and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp which contains a seed with a diminutive embryo and abundant endosperm. The seed makes up about 80% of the fruit

Acai Palms are grown for the acai berries. The berries of the acai palm are reputed to be very high in anti oxidents. Acai Palms ( Euterpe Oleracea) are originally from South America, and prefer a moist humus rich soil. Acai palms are not readily available in Australia at present, however seed has been imported and acai palms should be more widely available within a year or two. Acai Palms are also a source of edible palm hearts

Assai Palm. One of the most valuable palms that is famous for its anti-oxidant qualities of the fruit juice. It is a fast grower with multiple stems. The fruit is a round berry, black at maturity, pulp is edible and used in beverages. See picture of the 2 month old plant.

Acai is tropical in its requirements. In Sydney it would probably be safer to grow the closely related E. edulis, which is much more cool tolerant (should be ok in frost-free parts of Tassie). The berries have similar qualities, I believe. There is a lot of information available on the web.
The 'edulis' part refers to the palm heart btw. I had a good sized seedling with about 500mm trunk height whihc I dropped an Acacia tree onto a few years ago. The palm broke off neatly at ground level. It was dead, so not wanting to loose everything, I ripped the crownshaft apart and ate it. Very very good. I want more!
